How Energy Wheeling Works in South Africa

Energy wheeling lets your business access cost-effective renewable electricity — without building your own generation infrastructure. Instead, a vetted Independent Power Producer (IPP) generates clean energy from solar or wind and delivers it to you through the existing Eskom grid, wherever you are in South Africa.

The Wheeling Process Explained

An IPP generates renewable electricity and feeds it into Eskom’s transmission network. Eskom then tracks and “wheels” this energy to your facility at a different location via your existing grid connection. A Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) governs the commercial terms between you and the IPP. Eskom facilitates the transaction through the Wheeling Energy Purchase System (WEPS), applying a credit to your electricity bill and charging a standard wheeling fee. The result: clean, competitively priced energy — with no on-site infrastructure required.

The Key Players in Energy Wheeling

IPP

Independent Power Producer (IPP) Generates renewable electricity from solar, wind, or BESS projects and feeds it into the Eskom grid.

Eskom

Eskom (Grid Operator) Manages transmission of energy across the national grid, tracks the wheeled energy flow, and applies the WEPS credit to your bill.

Energy Brokers

Energy Brokers (Your Advisor) Sources and vets IPP projects, negotiates your PPA, and manages the process from feasibility through to financial close — at no cost to you.

Why Businesses Choose Wheeled Energy

Reduce electricity costs without capital outlay — no infrastructure to build or own.

Access wind, solar, and BESS projects across South Africa through a vetted IPP network of 1,500+ MW.

Meet your Scope 2 emissions targets and ESG reporting obligations with certified Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs).
